The landmark Stephen F. Austin Hotel and Paramount Theatre

March 6, 2018 by Beth Muecke Leave a Comment

Location: InterContinental Stephen F. Austin

I went to UT, so I am always looking for an excuse to visit Austin. I love seeing the new developments, but I also always love seeing the history of the city. This trip I photographed Connor Ryan among two historic landmarks of Austin, the Stephen F. Austin Hotel and the Paramount Theatre. I had him styled in a plain white button up and dark denim to keep the classic look for these timeless places.

The hotel finished a multimillion dollar renovation of all guestrooms, suites and public areas in March of 2013. Affectionately known as the ‘Stephen F,’ this Austin luxury hotel is ideally placed on Congress Avenue. The unique Art Deco façade is a famous Austin landmark and has been part of the city scene for more than 60 years. At the heart of the culture capital of Texas, this Austin luxury hotel is just blocks from art museums, the state capitol and right next door to Paramount Theatre. As a result, so many famous musicians have stayed at the hotel as well.

The Paramount Theatre is a live theatre venue/movie theatre located in downtown Austin, Texas. The classical revival style structure was built in 1915. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 1976. In the Paramount’s 100-year history, it has played host to a wide variety of acts ranging from vaudeville, musicals, legitimate theater, and movies, including premieres of such films as 1966’s Batman. Opening as a vaudeville house in 1915, the historic Paramount Theatre venue has hosted so many great performers over the years such as the famous magician Harry Houdini. Later, the Paramount Theatre changed with the times to become Austin’s grand movie palace. This theater has stood the test of time this past century, and has opened its doors to many big names such as Katharine Hepburn, Al Franken, Cyndi Lauper, and even former President Obama spoke at the theater in 2014. Next time you are in Austin I highly recommend staying at the Stephen F Austin hotel and walk next door to check out the Paramount during one of its shows!
